The history of tai chi

Known as taijiquan or tai chi chuan in China, tai chi is also sometimes called “shadow boxing.” It is one of the major branches of the traditional Chinese martial-art form known as wushu.

The words tai chi mean “infinity” or “vastness to the absolute extreme” and reflect ancient Chinese concepts of how the universe developed. According to ancient Chinese philosophy, the universe started as a vast void. From this, it developed into a state of tai chi—infinity or vastness to the ultimate extreme.

The word quan or chuan means “fist”. It appears at the end of the names of all Chinese martial-art styles—for example, xingyiquan and shaolinquan. Tai chi chuan is therefore a martial art based on an understanding of the universe.
